A Moosomin group is organizing the second annual Walk for Alzheimer’s in the community for this May.
The walk will start at the Legion in the morning on Saturday, May 24.
Last year was the first year Moosomin hosted the Alzheimer’s Walk.
This year Moosomin is considered an official in-person walk in Saskatchewan along with Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Prince Albert.
Bill Thorn experienced living with the impact of the disease after his wife, Phyllis, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
“My wife, Phyllis, had Alzheimer’s. It was just day-to-day activities that you just start to expect little impacts and what might begin happening down the road. The forgetfulness and ability to do basic things like preparing meals, counting money, signing her name. You just kind of learned to expect little inefficiencies every day.”
Thorn encourages the community to join the walk this May.
“The walk is so important to get the community out and raise awareness. It is interesting to hear how many families have been touched by it.”
Moosomin was put on the map last year for its outstanding fundraising total.
“Last year we raised over $140,000 with one donor of $100,000, and around 110 or so people register for the walk. Lots of family and friends came out which was amazing,” Thorn said.
He says some surrounding community members joined the walk in Moosomin last year. “It was absolutely overwhelming last year to see the amount of support and people who came out for the walk. Some of our family’s friends came from Weyburn and then people from Redvers. It was amazing and good to see.
“I hope the walk will encourage people to learn a little bit and be prepared should you have to deal with Alzheimer’s and then know who to talk to if you think you need help. I think that is as important as anything—to help people get through it and encourage them to lean on each other and ask questions.”
