Communities in Bloom is back in Moosomin this year. The town was awarded five blooms provincially last year which granted the community the ability to compete nationally this summer.
Judges will be at Moosomin Regional Park and Pipestone Hills Golf Course July 30 and touring the Town of Moosomin July 31.

Communities in Bloom organizer, Angela Thorn, was interviewed by the World-Spectator regarding the upcoming judging days.

See interview below:

How is Communities in Bloom going?
It has been going really good. We have got pretty much the route for the judges mapped out and all of the little jobs are either on their way to being finished or are finished. So it is going really well.

What are you working on right now to get ready?
There is still some painting happening at the ball park. Lyla and Pansy have been painting the bleachers, Zoie has been doing the weeding at the Community Gardens, and she has done some painting too.

We are working on our Upcycle Oasis—that is our little area that we want to try to have at least started before the judges get here because we are using all repurposed items for our little space by the Sportsplex. I am just working on all of the RSVPs for the meals while the judges are here.

What are some last minute need-to-do things before the judges come?

We have made a few posts about trying to get people to clean up their yards, if you’re out for a walk and you see garbage then pick it up, and trying to be a good neighbour and community.
We are encouraging that—weeding your garden, keeping your lawns mowed, those type of things.

What are you looking for in regards to help from the community? What are you asking from the community?

Last year was fun because we could ask the businesses to have an orange themed window display. I don’t know what to ask for this year to welcome the judges, but if any businesses, or anybody who may want to put some kind of display in their window toward welcoming the judges or anything like that we would be happy to make sure we drove by it and pointed it out to them. I will probably post about that on Facebook as well.

We are trying to continuously post because the judges do check our social media feed so we try to mention a few things—because we don’t have bylaws for waterless Wednesdays or walking once a week to reduce emissions, but we try to post that just to remind people that once in awhile that it is good to be more environmentally friendly and that kind of thing.

If someone wanted to help in some way after reading this, what could they do?

Anyone can reach out to me at the town office if they want to help. We are currently looking for materials for our Upcycle Oasis. We have a vision in our heads for things. We are still in need of some paint, some outdoor fabric, outdoor cushions, some wood, and we want some of those sun shades—some people buy them and they are a triangle or a square with gromets on the corners and you can tie them together. We are trying to look for something like that in case it rains in this one area.

People could also volunteer their help to other community members such as if you see maybe an elderly person or somebody that has trouble keeping up their yard if they would volunteer and go help by pulling weeds or mow a lawn. There is always something that needs cleaned up. That would really help when the judges come, so if anybody wants to help out that way, or they can contact us. We usually have little projects on-the-go that are needing painted or needing weeded.

What will the days look like when the judges come to town?

The first day we are heading to the lake. We are having lunch at the lake store, touring the lake on the bus and on the boat. Then, we are going to Pipestone Hills Golf Course and the judges will go on a tour around it. Then, we are going to Lori and Guy Shepherd’s in the RM and having a tour of Lori’s beautiful gardens, and the Hop farm before going to Skout Brewing to have The CrateHouse cater our supper and to have farm-to-table beer.

The next day we are all in town. We start with breakfast at the Witch’s Brew, lunch is at the Armoury catered by the Cork and Bone. Then we are touring all afternoon and the Parks and Rec awards will be that night with the Red Barn catering.

We picked all businesses that are people from town and opened their business in Moosomin or chose to come back to Moosomin.

We are just putting the finishing touches on everything. I am making table cards for tables, finalizing final numbers for the caterers, and a lot of a little bit left. We are getting pretty excited for the judges. It is coming up quick.
