The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 81 in Moosomin will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Legion with a special Canada Day ceremony recognizing veterans and officially dedicating two commemorative crosswalks.
Brian Beckett with the Moosomin Legion announced plans for the event during the Chamber meeting last Monday.
The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the four-way stop on Main Street to unveil the commemorative crosswalks.
“We’ll start in front of the Town Office,” Beckett said. “Then we’ll cut a ribbon dedicating the crosswalks.”
The two crosswalks, located between the Town Office and RBC and between the Credit Union and Broadway Commons, feature maple leaf designs in honour of veterans and the Legion’s centennial.
Beckett said the crosswalks recognize those who served and sacrificed. Following the ceremony, the Legion will host a free lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs beginning at noon at the branch.
Children’s activities will continue throughout the afternoon, including a penny auction from noon to 3 p.m. and rock painting from 1-3 p.m., with all materials supplied.
The commemorative crosswalk project is intended to bring the community together to pay tribute to veterans while celebrating the branch’s 100 years of service in Moosomin.
Speeches during the ceremony will be brief before residents are invited to join the Legion for lunch and family activities.
