On Sunday, December 7, the Moosomin Legion will be holding a free Holiday Dinner at the Legion hall. The supper is for veterans, members of the military, RCMP, Legion members, and seniors.

“The idea came about when I learned about the Share the Warmth grant from Sask Energy,” says Donna Lafleur with the Moosomin Legion. “I took it to a meeting, and we decided that whether we got it or not, we would still hold this free holiday supper. We’re really looking forward to kicking off the holidays with our seniors, veterans, and RCMP.”

Lafleur says that at one point, the Moosomin Legion was not in a position to be able to put on events like this one, but thanks to community support, they are able to give back to the community now.

“Our Legion is much more active in the community than we have been in past years, because we now have the funds to do more. Years ago we were just barely holding the doors open, but thanks to support from individuals and businesses in the town, we have some more money that we can spend on supporting our veterans and RCMP.”

She says that the Legion is hoping to fill the hall and provide a holiday meal for as many people as they can.

“We personally invited all the RCMP and military from the area, and after we get all of their responses, then it is open to seniors and Legion members. We decided that 150-175 attendees would probably be the most we can hold in the hall and Legion club room. I also don’t know if we’ll max out, because it is a busy time of year, but we’d love to have all that can attend.

“For our supper we’re having ham, scalloped potatoes, desert, and anybody that wants to bring a salad can bring their own salad. It’s a bit of a potluck, but just for the salads because we will provide everything else.”

The Legion also reached out to Borderland Co-op to seek a reduced price on the ham for the supper, but got a pleasant surprise.

“We contacted Co-op asking for a small discount on the ham, and they replied that they would be donating the ham free of charge.

Lafleur sees this as an opportunity to give back to the community and those who have supported the Legion in the past.

“Part of the Legion’s motto is to serve, which involves our veterans, RCMP and their families. Part of doing that, especially at this time of year, is addressing the social isolation that can affect many older members of the community. Their kids and grandkids might not be around or close to here, so they might not have anyone around for the holidays. This way, at least we can give them something to get out and be with others closer to the holiday season.”

The Legion members say they have discussed making the free Holiday Dinner an annual event, but would like to see how the first year goes.
“We would love to have this every year. As of now we’d like to see how year one goes and how many people we get to come out before making plans for next year,” she said.

“We’re hoping for 100-175 people attend, and we have 100 seats reserved for our RCMP and veterans. I don’t think we’ll get all of our RCMP officers in the area, as they are very busy, but I do hope we get as many as possible to come for supper.”

She says that being able to give back to the community and show support for seniors and veterans is a great feeling.

“It feels phenomenal. I can’t even express how grateful we are that the community supports us, and so in turn, we can support the community. When I first took over, we were in danger of closing our doors, and now we can donate back and be able to give more and more support to those who could use it.

“We’ve been told by a few people that we should put up a donation jar, because they don’t want to come for supper and not give anything, but we’ve asked for zero donations, because that’s not the point. We are putting this on as a thank you for supporting us, and to give back to those who have made sacrifices for the freedoms we have. It’s our Christmas gift to the community,” she said.
