Thrift store donates to breakfast program

The Moosomin Thrift Store has donated $4,000 to the McNaughton High School breakfast program, ensuring that students can enjoy a nutritious breakfast every day.
The Thrift Store makes money on its sales and donates the profits back to the community.
This contribution, which amounts to $400 per month, will fully fund the breakfast program for the entire school year.
Laura Teale, the home economics teacher at McNaughton High School, says that McNaughton has been offering breakfast for the last 4-5 years, but before Covid-19, the school had a limited breakfast program. The school only put out a toaster and bread for students every morning. “Now we put a little bit more love into it and do muffins on Monday, cereal day, toast and bagels, yogurt cup days, that sort of thing.”
This is the third year the Thrift Store has donated to the program.
When asked why it’s important for the Thrift Store to support the McNaughton breakfast program, Thift Store manager Sam Campbell says “it’s for the children. The board thinks this is a fantastic program to support and we would like to see nobody go hungry, but especially children, so it fits right into our guidelines. This is exactly the kind of program we want to support.”
Teale says that on average the school provides 20 breakfasts each day. “We have certainly seen a bit of an increase over the last year or two—with rising grocery costs and families being really busy lately. It seems like the kids definitely need that option at school.”
Teale says she believes this breakfast program has helped teachers do their job more effectively. “We don’t want our kids to be hungry in the classroom, we want our kids well-fed so that they are ready to learn in the morning, allowing us to do our jobs better.”
