The 64-team bonspiel scheduled for March 25–29 in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Arcola Curling Club is falling into place. After a year and a half of preparation, it is nearly here.

Warren Neuman is the chairman of the committee of 20 volunteers. He said there is plenty for people to see and enjoy over the five-day event. Wednesday and Thursday night games will begin, but no games will go after midnight. The event is open to all curlers with the youngest being 13 years old and older players up to 80 years old. Players are coming from across the province and neighboring provinces.

The week before the event takes place, professional ice maker Jason Reddekopp from Spiritwood will be in the arena, making the hockey rink into curling ice instead. There are many steps in preparing the ice for stones instead of a hockey puck.

The bonspiel is in memory of Cody Grimes who passed away a few years ago due to some health issues. Cody and his brother Micky Grimes were in partnership with Eagle Oilfield Services. Micky has become the main sponsor of the bonspiel in memory of his brother.

Friday, March 27 will be the opening ceremony. At the celebration, Sheena Grimes, Cody’s wife, will speak to the crowd. The banquet is open to everyone, which will include a live auction, supper with the meat being prepared by the Southeast Butcher Block, and the rest by the club. There will be live entertainment by the Leftovers.

There will be breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with supper being provided each night. There will be two kitchens on the go at all times, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to get something to eat.

Games will be scheduled throughout the days on March 28-29. The final games will be played on Sunday at 6 p.m. Saturday night another band from Moosomin named Old Habits will be at the Arcola Prairie Place Hall to entertain.

They have an online merchandise store with several of the items available at the bonspiel. Raffle tables are slowly filling up as well. The Pro Shop from Estevan will be on hand with their products. Many volunteers are still needed to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

They are still looking for one last team to join in on the fun. One team had to back out. The team will be accepted until the time of the bonspiel and can contact Warren.
