Assistant Recreation Director Angela Thorn provided an update on upcoming Communities in Bloom initiatives and summer events during a recent Moosomin Chamber meeting, outlining several community projects, contests, and fundraising efforts planned throughout the coming months.
The Town-Wide Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 30 from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thorn said 23 entries have already been registered, with a map and participant list expected to be released during the week of the event. The garage sale is being promoted as an environmental initiative aimed at reducing waste by encouraging residents to reuse and repurpose items.
Mystery prizes organized by Economic Development Officer Jeff Cole will be hidden at five participating garage sales. The annual Community Cleanup Day will take place June 4 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with headquarters located at the Legion Memorial Hall patio. Thorn said the change in location is intended to improve visibility and encourage participation.
Dairy Queen has donated garbage bags and treats for participating school children, while Tim Horton’s will once again provide coffee for volunteers. Water refill stations will also be available throughout the day.
Businesses are being encouraged to participate by sending staff members to assist with cleanup efforts. Photos of participating businesses will be shared on social media during the event.
Communities in Bloom judges are scheduled to visit Moosomin on June 20 and 21. Thorn said the judges evaluate the community based on categories including community appearance, environmental action, heritage conservation, tree management, landscape, and floral displays.
This year’s Communities in Bloom theme is “Therapeutic Garden – Healing Through Nature.” Residents are being encouraged to share stories about their gardening experiences and what gardening means to them personally.
Several gardening and beautification contests will also be held this year, including Flower Power, Upcycle and Grow, Perennial Paradise, Butterfly and Bee Haven, Eco Garden Excellence, Scott’s Curbside Charm and Harrvest Heroes.
The Business Challenge, titled “Blossoms and Bragging Rights,” encourages businesses to enhance their outdoor spaces with flowers, landscaping, artwork, and seating areas intended to create more welcoming gathering spaces downtown.
Thorn also announced progress on a new tourist rest stop project. A grain bin donated by Dale Loneseth will be refurbished into a visitor rest area featuring picnic tables, benches, planters, event information boards, and advertising opportunities for local businesses.
A gardening workshop in partnership with the Visual Arts Centre, Nature Saskatchewan, Gateway Co-op, and the library is planned for May 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshop will focus on pollinator plants, tree care, and a community plant exchange. Communities in Bloom is also partnering with RainBarrel.ca for a fundraiser selling repurposed food-grade rain barrels for $75 each. Thorn said $10 from every barrel sold will support future Communities in Bloom projects. Delivery is expected July 2 if a minimum order of 100 barrels is reached.
Additional summer events planned for July 1 include the Community in Bloom Car Show at the Sports Grounds from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., beer gardens, an art show and sale hosted by the Visual Arts Centre, the grand openings of the Pat McDonald Golf World, Moosomin Pickleball Courts and the Best Friends Dog Park. There will also be the annual Parks and Recreation Awards that day.
Moosomin will also participate in the Saskatchewan Community Challenge throughout June. Local sports teams, fitness groups, and recreation organizations are being encouraged to submit participation numbers as the community competes for provincial recognition and prizes.
