John Sheard, 94, of Grenfell, Saskatchewan, passed away on September 29, 2025.

Johnston (John) Irwin Sheard was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan on June 18, 1931. Hew as the fourth son of Benjamin and Ida (McLoughry). John farmed with his brother Francis northwest of Maryfield, Saskatchewan.

Farming for well over 60 years, John enjoyed working with cattle until 1980, when the farm switched to strictly grain. He loved working the land and had pride in providing food to the world. He had a wealth of knowledge and was not afraid to learn new techniques to help improve soil health and crop yield. The last crops were harvested in 2007 and the Sheard Brothers retired in 2008.

John married Geraine Thompson (nee Sauter) on February 15, 1977, becoming a father to Jackie, Louisa and Mary. Through the years, they enjoyed many fishing trips with family and friends. They also drove many miles through the United States, enjoying historical sights and vast scenery. With Geraine, family and/or friends, John was known for his “Sunday drives” on any day of the week, traveling through most of southern Saskatchewan, visiting friends along the way. Many miles were also traveled around the home fields checking out crop conditions.

After Geraine’s passing, John found friendship and entertainment through traveling with Country Blend on several of their bus tours, visiting the Maritimes, Eastern Canada, Western Canada, south to Las Vegas and the Northwest Territories. One of his outstanding memories was traveling to Tuktoyaktuk and seeing the Arctic Ocean. He could proudly say he had visited all three oceans surrounding Canada.

John was predeceased by his wife Geraine (2017); brothers Bill, Bob, Tom and Francis and parents Benjamin and Ida (McLoughry).

John is survived by children: Jackie (Lana), Louisa (Bruce) and Mary (Kent); Grandchildren: Twyla (Jamie) and Kurtis (Kelsey), Melissa (Jeff) and Haydon (Tawni) and Emily; Great-grandchildren: Eric, Khloe and Matthew, Jack and Adeline, Bishop and Dominic. Also surviving John are his youngest brother Alec (Bev); Nieces: Kelly, Sharron, Sandra, Laura, Angela and Ilona; Nephews: Grant, Garth, Bill, John, David and Wayne, along with several great-nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to all those friends John met throughout his life, especially in the last several years. Those at Redvers, Manor and Grenfell that enjoyed his company and terrible jokes. He had no idea how he touched many lives.

Thank you to the Hebert family for your friendship and guidance over the years. You helped extend John’s love of farming beyond retirement, by allowing him to be a part of your farming life and having the chance to observe how technology has progressed in agriculture. He was able to enjoy conversations about the land to the end of his life.

Thank you to doctors and staff at Indian Head Union Hospital, and staff at Wolseley Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Carson for his compassion.

A Memorial Come & Go Tea will be held at the Legacy Inn in Grenfell, Saskatchewan on October 26, 2025, from 1-4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maryfield Cemetery Committee, Box 58, Maryfield, SK S0G 3K0, the Fairlight Cemetery Club c/o Roberta Clark, Box 51 Fairlight, SK S0G 1M0 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK S4P 2R3.
