Ern passed away very peacefully on Sunday, February 22 at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin, Saskatchewan with Monica by his side.
Ernest was born in Portscatho, Cornwall, England to Rodney and Rona Pethick. He was the younger of the two sons, Ronald being the eldest.
Rodney was a policeman, and normally they move around with the position, however, Ernest was blind in the left eye after Rona contracted German measles whilst pregnant. So, the family was stationed at Altarnun so that Ernest could attend the Plymouth Eye infirmary regularly as a child.
After leaving school Ernest learnt the trades of Mason and Bricklayer and became certified in both fields with honours. However, the yearn to travel was in the blood and so he took his HGV driver’s test and became a long-distance truck driver, but on weekends spent many happy hours in the local public house in Lewannick, where he played darts and met Monica. Using his skills as a bricklayer, they built their first home together on land gifted to them by Monica’s parents, next to the White family farm, where he helped during the summer harvest collecting bales.
Ern married Monica White from Lewannick, Cornwall on the July 15 1978 where they lived overlooking the village church, where Monica’s Dad and Ern climbed the tower steps each week to keep the clock duly wound. They separated after three years but remarried again on the October 23, 1986. They have two sons, Alistair (Markie) and Darren and two granddaughters, Marilla and Hazel.
